A few years back, I came across a majestic granite sphinx in the Egyptian galleries of the Metropolitan Museum. Inspired, I sculpted my own lion from clay. He had such great spirit that I decided to scale him up. Now he stands over my garden—a gentle sentinel with a pleasant demeanor that quietly warns you not to tangle with him.

This bronze sphinx was inspired by a granite one that is part of the Metropolitan Museum's Egyptian Collection. I made an 18 inch long model out of clay, took a mold and cast it in plastic. It had enough character that I decided to scale it up. It now presides over my garden in Pepeekeo. He's friendly but you don't want to cross him.
